The better you know your style, the easier your search will be. What suits you best - a sweetheart or straight neckline, empire-line or drop waist? What look do you want - traditional or high drama? Imagine yourself on the big day: what look do you want? Are you a fairytale princess or a sophisticated, elegant lady?
Step 2 - Do your research
From bridal magazines to designer websites and forums, there's no shortage of information for the bride-to-be. Have a look at the wide variety of gown shapes, styles and fabrics, but keep an open mind because you will be surprised when trying them on what actually suits you.
Step 3 - Check out the shops
Make a list of the designers you prefer and find out where these are stocked locally. Ring a shortlist of shops before making appointments. Find out how long their appointments are, whether you have a consultant assigned to you, and whether there are additional charges for alterations.
Step 4 - Planning your day
Saturday's are always very busy in bridal boutiques, so if you can, choose a week day. Choose two shops and when you make your appointments, tell the shops that your aim is to purchase that day and ask for a second appointment later in the day. That gives you time to return later if necessary. Don't forget to build travelling time into your itinerary.
Step 5 - Dressing up
Try on six to eight dresses at each shop. The consultants know their ranges well so let them help you. Explain what you like and don't like about each gown that you try on - this will help your consultant suggest other options. Retry your shortlist before leaving so they are firmly fixed in your memory. Be ruthless - if a gown no longer gives you that special feeling, cross it off the list. Ask your consultant if they have pictures to take with you, or take a quick snap of each dress (if they'll let you). Most importantly, enjoy yourself!
Step 6 - Review time
Don't rush your decision; this is the most important dress you will ever buy! Sit down with a coffee and consider your two shortlists. Try to remember how each dress made you feel when you put it on - you want a wedding gown that transforms you and makes you feel special.
Step 7 - Ordering the dress
Hopefully, your careful preparation has brought you a decision. Call the shop that you will not be buying from to cancel your second appointment, then try 'the one' again, just to make sure, and place your order. You will usually need to pay a deposit, so remember to take your credit card!
